Ordinary sponges are bad for the environment and your body.  Switch to all-natural luffa.  They are compostable and soft enough for your glass and rough enough for your pots and pans. How to care for your luffa: Please do not set it in places where water will be left on it, preventing it from thoroughly drying between uses. If appropriately dried, they will ask for up to three months. About 5 inches long. No seeds.
